The Rising Stars designation, awarded by Thomson Reuters, is limited to no more than 2.5 percent of attorneys in each state who are 40 years of age or younger, or who have been in practice for 10 years or fewer. Selections are made through a patented multi phase process that includes peer nominations, independent research, and peer evaluations across more than 70 practice areas. Before founding Spahija Law, Amel Spahija served as an Assistant District Attorney in two New York City District Attorney's Offices: Kings County (Brooklyn) and Richmond County (Staten Island). In those roles, he handled long term investigations into violent crimes, firearms cases, narcotics matters, and criminal organizations. He litigated hearings and trials in New York State Supreme Court and New York City Criminal Court, presented cases to grand juries, and made charging decisions on serious felony matters.
